is seeking a Traffic Engineering Technician to work based out of MDOT SHA's Office of Traffic and Safety (OOTS), Traffic Operations Section (TOSS) to support statewide project locations.
The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of five (5) years of experience supporting design, construction, and damage repair of traffic signals/devices and associated infrastructure.
Summary:
The Traffic Engineering Technician position performs remedial design of repairs to damaged traffic control devices (TCD), inventory and asset management duties, and construction inspection.
The position performs a mix of office and field duties at a 60/40 split respectively.
The technician also provides support with billings, inventory, and responses to the public related to TCDs.
Required Experience/Skills:
Minimum of five (5) years' experience with design/construction of TCDs.
Possession of IMSA Certification(s) for Roadway Lighting, Sign and Pavement Marking, Traffic Signals, Traffic Signal Inspector, and/or Work Zone Safety a plus.
Working skill in operating computer equipment, software programs and field inspection equipment.
Ability to read and interpret project plans and contract specifications.
Ability to prepare simple drawings, detailed reports and maintain project records.
Communicate effectively with agency and contractor personnel, and the general public.
Must have the ability to work in a team environment and must have good oral and written communication skills.
Must possess valid Motor Vehicle Driver's License.
Responsibilities:
Inspect damaged TCDs to determine needed repairs and functional operation.
Design repairs to the device ensuring compliance to State standards.
Inspect and perform minor repairs to detection wiring if needed to determine if detection is functioning properly.
Prepare Plans, Specification, and Engineering Estimates for remedial design of TCDs.
Schedules field meetings with contractors, customers, and other SHA employees for fast turn-around maintenance/construction projects.
Prepare direct billings for crashes and construction damage.
Assist in responding to PIA, attorney, and CCMS tickets concerning to operation of TCDs by researching maintenance reports, timing charts, and signal plans, and draft response to customer for Section Chief review.
Develop and update, as needed, TOSS standard operating procedures.
Assist with collecting field data for Traffic Signal Inventory database.
Ability to locate damaged equipment not otherwise discovered that are both safety sensitive and non-safety sensitive and can create damaged equipment reports.
Ability to locate and develop an inventory count of specific equipment.
Assists with providing clarification in the event of a dispute regarding installed vs.
non-installed equipment.
Ability to review for locations of potential storm wash out resulting in system operational issues.
Assists from a legal standpoint by providing an existing image of an intersection with equipment.
Design decision-making when space and/or layout is a concern for the installation of new equipment.
Communication between MDOT SHA resulting in faster repair of damaged equipment, reduction of down time and the potential for liability issues associated with traffic accidents and/or safety hazards.
Provides a database from which UPS (battery backup) contracts can be created and monitored Provides information for both construction and testing contractors enabling them to determine where/how to start work resulting in expedited work schedules.
